Alright, so far this weekend I've seen three movies that I've been trying to get around to seeing forever now: Saw, Garden State, and Donnie Darko. Ahem, Saw: I had really high hopes for this one; people told me it was one of the scariest movies they'd ever seen. It had a lot of potential, but I'm afraid that's as far as it went. There were a few moments I thought someone was cleaver or creepy... but the ending WAS SO FRICKIN' LAME. Basically the writers wrote themselves into a corner while trying to add about 15 twists and the ending MADE NO SENSE!! All that good movie up to that point just lost all meaning. There were about 15,000 plot holes, most of which my brother and I were laughing at all through the movie and into the next morning. Final verdict: could have been great, turned out to be DUMB. Speaking of having high expectations, Garden State was supposedly the best movie this summer and showcased a brilliant Zach Braft (sp?) stretching his writing, acting, and directing muscles. He did this very well, so well in fact, he thought it necessary to place himself in every single scene without fail. I know the movie was supposed to be about him, but I think it actually could have done better with a little more development of other characters; basically the guy comes across as totally self-absorbed. That's not to say the movie was bad, it was quite cute actually, but I don't think it elevated me to any higher level, which many people told me it would. The music was great, though. I can't get that Coldplay song out of my head, so overall I cut my losses with the "best movie" stuff failing to deliver, and I took it for what it was: just a really cute little love story/my father messed me up as a kid so I'm all angsty and weird now but I still get Natalie Portman for a girlfriend type thing. Best movie I saw this weekend? Donnie Darko. Hands down. Sure parts of it almost didn't make any sense, but I thought it made just enough sense to be intrigueing and not totally ridiculous, but at the same time didn't spell everything out for you (i.e. it made you think about it). It was entertaining and kind of sad but sweet (he does make the ultimate sacrifice for the girl he loves...) and who didn't go crazy for Mad World? If you listen to the original version by Tears for Fears it's quite different, it's interesting to hear how much better it sounds with just one piano as opposed to synths and drums, and Gary Jewels (sp?) has the perfect voice for the lyrics and slow tempo. So yea, it was weird (like me), science-fictiony (which I love), and had an original premise (which I really appreciate), so all in all, a definate keeper in my book. :) Color: It's still raining here...
